10. Doing Time

The new Liberty Hotel in Boston has been making headlines as a former jail-turned-luxury-hotel. After a five-year renovation program that cost upward of $150 million, the Charles Street jail has maintained some precious features that pay homage to its history—such as a restaurant called Clink, and a bar called Alibi housed in the former “drunk tank.”

But if you’re looking for a more, well, authentic prison experience, you’ll have to jet yourself over to Latvia to the Karosta Prison. Located in Liepaja (about three hours west of Riga), this former Soviet detention facility was once known as the “prison that nobody escaped from.”

Today, it welcomes (if that’s the right word) visitors to spend a night for about $16.

Dragon Challenge

The Dragon Challenge takes the place of the old Duelling Dragons coaster.  Still the same roller coaster with some radical changes to the queue line, so you feel part of the world of Harry Potter.  Two “dragons” fight each other and take you along for the ride.  Just as with the old Dueling Dragons
Flight of the Hippogriff

A coaster for the younger visitors, the Flight of the Hippogriff uses the “Flying Unicorn” coaster from the old Lost Continent.  The theming and story line for this ride follows right in line with the Harry Potter series and the coaster has been remodeled to look like a Hippogriff.  Although it’s meant for kids, it provides some amazing views of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, as well as some thrills, even for adults.
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

The most anticipated ride in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter utilizes new ride-technology to take guests on a broomstick ride for a quidditch match!  The queue line allows visitors to explore Hogwart’s Castle.  The line is almost as much fun as the ride!  The show never stops from the time you enter the castle until you’re “released” from the ride.  The ride itself provides thrills and scenes that may be a bit much for the younger wizards-to-be and you do have to be 48″ tall to mount your “broomstick” for the match.

If you haven’t been burned to a crisp by a dragon or eaten by a Hippogriff by this point, you can enjoy some of the shows that crop up around Hogsmeade Village or “board” the train at platform 9-3/4 for the ride home.

In fact, the Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva went ahead to declare a state of emergency in Bangkok and many countries issued warnings against travel to Thailand. Russia, Italy, and South Korea warned their citizens not to visit Bangkok, while Israel, Singapore, Hong Kong, and France advised citizens against taking non essential travel to Bangkok. Similarly, China alerted citizens to postpone travel to Thailand, while Australia recommended a ‘high degree of caution’ for tourists visiting Thailand.

The outbreak of violence has already forced a mass exodus of tourists from Bangkok. British nationals would do well to check out the website of ‘The Foreign and Commonwealth Office’ for comprehensive information on Thailand travel under the current circumstances. The website warns against all but essential travel to Bangkok and certain areas of Thailand and no travel at all to certain specific areas. Earlier on, the violence was mainly concentrated within Bangkok and things seemed to be limping back to normalcy. However, the recent blocking of a train carrying military supplies in the Khon Kaen province some 241 miles northeast of Bangkok indicates the spreading nature of the unrest. The Red Shirts alleged that military supplies being transported by the train were meant for use against fellow protestors in Bangkok. Quite naturally, the scenario has resulted in a major dip in flights to Thailand.

A peaceful resolution to the issue seems pretty slim as the Red Shirts want the Parliament to be dissolved within a month and fresh elections, while the government says that there is no scope for negotiations as long as the protests remain illegal. Presently, Silom Road, known as the Wall Street of Thailand wears a deserted look with many of the big shopping malls, restaurants, offices, and banks being closed down.

Bangkok has started to look like a city under siege with thousands of Red Shirts barricading themselves in prominent areas. The police and military are out on the streets in full riot gear in overwhelming numbers, while defence helicopters swarm the skies. The recent spate of grenade attacks led to the closure of elevated train and subway stations in Bangkok. It is uncertain when things will stabilise, but on a brighter note, it may be surmised that cheap flights to Thailand would be available in greater numbers once the crisis would be over. This is because airliners would be keen to book more and more passengers to offset their losses.

However, as of now, the situation further seems to be spiralling out of control with government supporters, including the Red Shirt factions also coming out against the Red Shirt protesters. The situation is all the more complicated with reports pouring in that many defence officers are also mixed up with protestors. Whatever the situation, a major atrocity can not be ruled out as the government has been issuing ultimatums of using excessive force to quell the demonstrations.
